The Sickle Cell Athlete

“A community for sickle cell suffers to enhance health & life!”

Meet the Sickle Cell Athlete. “my TRUE self”

Posted by Nii Wilson on September 22, 2008

Hello World,

My name is Coach Nii Wilson “The Sickle Cell Athlete”

and I suffer from Sickle Cell- “SC disease”

(and yes there are several types of sickle cell disease)

I also suffer from Ulcerative digestive issues that I will also discuss

from time to time.

I am a sports performance coach and President of

Athletic Combined Training Systems, LLC ( www.Athletic CTS.com ) a place where

high school football, wrestling, and track and field sprinters can go

to improve “power, speed, and performance”

First and formost I would like to say that I am not

the most religous person on the planet but I appreciate

what the LORD has done for me…

1) Living a passionate life

2) Feeling robust and full of life despite having my “conditions”

3) Beautiful wife, daughter, and people who truly love me and always KEEP IT REAL

4) Sending Angels my way that put me with the right people and situations.

5) Being able to serve my country with 4 years of proud service in the US ARMY

I created this BLOG because of the fact that I want to personally

connect with you, share your pain, inspire, and improve the health & athletic performance

of those with sickle cell. I hope to inspire ALL and improve the sports

performance of those athletes that do not even suffer from sickle cell disease as well.

To be honest this BLOG would not even be here today if it was not for

idea and inspiration from Sports Performance Coach Eric Cressey.

Coach Cressey told me that I had an inspirational story that could help others

with sickle cell improve health, performance, and live their best lives.

And as a Coach and Fitness Entrepreneur 1 thing I learned this week end

at the Ryan Lee boot camp (do YOU even know who Ryan Lee is?????) was to chase my

dreams and passion instead of money.

So I ask this favor of you…

Take this journey with me and help me build this strong community together.

Let’s make a promise together to improve our health and performance,

and live our lives with passion and to the fullest.

“Go to your destiny, be truly happy, and live a life of love!”

Your Coach in Health and Performance,

Nii Wilson

P.S.- PLEEEEASE share your comments I love the spirit of humanity. Let’s connect.

And if either of us do not wake up to speak to one another 2morrow just remember

your well being is in my thoughts and if you were here we would have a laugh and hug together.

P.P.S.- here is a HUG FOR YOU

I do not make too many promises but 1 thing I can promise is

that I will be a man of my word. I will not be just some random face

behind a computer. I will instill passion, laughter, inspiration,

and great health & sports performance information to improve your life.

Be a friend to me and I will be a friend to you. I will be transparent that

means you will see me as I am.  When you strip a person down to their essence,

hold nothing back, and are truthful you see their true self and this is the stuff

that creates life long lasting relationships!

Going to the Bronx, VA Hospital

Posted by Nii Wilson on October 25, 2008

Hello People,

Another crisis more fun news in my life (insert sarcasm)

It’s Oct 3 (I took a while publishing this because I was ill for 2 weeks and forgot)

As I was having fun training the other day

running faster than my boot camp members …as I always do haha.

Then the next day after thinking I had “muscle pain”

then 24hours later I am getting sickle cell pains in both knees and can barely

walk. I had to get the help of an old lady just to help me carry my daughter

down the stairs. The pain was getting SO bad I was afraid that I would

get a sharp pain

I got the pain when I was on the New York subway. And if

any of you have been on our subways the NYC subway system is not

the most handicap friendly.

Let me tell you as a sprinter it sucks when you can’t even walk.

Well let me tell you if you have ever been to a VA hospital waiting room

the wait can be LOOONG. It may be faster watching grass grow..HAHA

But I am glad that the VA hospital in the BRONX was not shut down as rumors had reported.

I was only there for about 4 hours got my meds and and my wife and daughter picked me up.

I was in bed for about 4 days…what fun and I could not jog, run, sprint, trot or skip for 2 weeks

(wait a minute..what dude in their right mind skip…but anyway)

Take care of your selves and each other. PEACE

donate blood…save a live

Nii

P.S.- This does not have anything to do directly with sickle cell but here is a worthy cause.

The Lift Strong organization is a program started by world renowned fitness and sports trainer

Alwyn Cosgrove.

This organization helps support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

All Proceeds go to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month- I didn’t know :(

Posted by Nii Wilson on September 29, 2008

Hello everyone,

Nii here. It’s another beautiful day in Bronx, NY. I was on YOTUBE this weekend and was looking

for cool videos that I could add to this BLOG. After watching several videos I noticed one that mentioned

that September was Sickle Cell Awareness month. Of my 28 years on this planet I never knew there was

a month dedicated to awareness and those that suffered with this disease. More needs to be done to make

people more aware of this issue. People need to be aware that there are several types of the Sickle Cell

Disease..type AS, SC, SS, and the several types of Thalassemias.

Who Is Affected?

In the United States, hemoglobin SC and SS disease (sickle cell anemia) affects mostly African Americans. Some forms of sickle cell disease may occur, although less frequently, in people with different ethnic backgrounds, such as those whose ancestors came from Mediterranean countries (including Turkey, Greece, and Italy), East India, or Middle Eastern countries.

FYI: If you have the sickle cell “trait” and experience “symptoms” then guess what…

YOU MAY HAVE SICKLE CELL DISEASE. I have met plenty of people who say that they

“only have the trait” but have been sick and in the hospital more than myself.

My point of today’s BLOG post is BE AWARE and get a Hemoglobin electrophoresis test.

This is a test that measures the different types of the oxygen-carrying substance (hemoglobin) in the blood.

If you are in a relationship and have the sickle cell trait and plan to have kids with the person you are with make sure you get tested for sickle cell…your kids will be thankful that you did.

Well mommy just went to school so Isis and I will go out and enjoy the beautiful NY

weather…while it lasts.
